Former national
goalkeeper and Captain Warren Barrett has been appointed national goal-keeping
coach on a one-year contract. The 38-year-old, who led the Reggae Boyz during the country's historic qualification for the 1998 World Cup, will take up duties on June 22nd. "I just hope to bring my wealth of experience from playing and hopefully I can impart what I've learnt over the years to the goalkeepers on our national teams," said Barrett. Barrett, who last represented the country at the 2000 Gold Cup against Honduras, made his debut 10 years before, He was Jamaica's most capped goalkeeper playing in 130 matches. He received his formal training in goalkeeper coaching when he attended the CONCACAF goal-keeping course in 2001 under the instruction of the well-known Lincoln Phillips. Improving concentration - Barnes In the meanwhile, national head coach of John Barnes says despite the good performance against El Salvador in Washington on Saturday, the Reggae Boyz still have some improvement to do. The heavy
contingent of local based players managed to earn a creditable goal less draw
however, Barnes says some tweaking is needed in the defence."We gave them one or two opportunities by giving the ball away in poor areas by making wring decisions ... dribbling instead of passing etc. But I cant complained because it was really an inexperienced side and we played against a good side who created only two or three chances due to mistakes by us so it's really just about improving the concentration and decision making over 90 minutes," said Barnes. And RJR Sports understands that midfielder Jamal Campbell Royce, Khari Stephenson and strikers Luton Shelton and Nicholas Addlery are among the overseas based players who will join the squad for Jamaica's friendly international against Panama at the national stadium on Sunday. The Reggae Boyz will face Panama in their final warm up game in preparation for the CONCACAF Gold Cup starting next month. |
