Questions are being raised in Britain
over how the UK
government managed to remain unaware of the alleged high levels of corruption
in the Turks and Caicos for such an extended period of time.Britain is planning to suspend the territory's constitution in a bid to restore good governance. The commission of Inquiry set up last July says it found widespread corruption in the Turks and Caicos Islands government. The former Premier Michael Misick stepped down in March after the results of the probe were made public. At a recent parliamentary debate in the UK on overseas territories one MP said he was not entirely surprised that such a situation could have occurred in an overseas territory. MP John Stanley branded the situation a disgrace and said there are lessons for the Foreign Office on their treatment of overseas territories. "The Foreign Office was asleep on the job and they simply had not woken up to what was going on in the Turks and Caicos Islands," said Mr. Stanley. The British government is now awaiting a final report on the inquiry which is due this month. |
