President of the People's National Party (PNP) Portia
Simpson-Miller is reserving comment on reports that Vice-President Dr. Peter
Phillips is planning to announce his bid for the leadership of the Party. RJR News caught up with Mrs. Simpson-Miller Friday night as she left a service held at the New Testament Church of God in Old Harbour, St. Catherine. The Party President told our St. Catherine correspondent that she was not aware of media reports that Dr. Phillips could declare his hand in another 24 hours. Challenge good for the PNP In the meantime, at least one political commentator believes the time has come for a leadership challenge in the PNP.
Reacting to news that Dr. Phillips will soon announce his
intentions regarding a leadership challenge, lecturer in communication studies
at the University
of Technology Martin Henry
said a challenge could be a boon to the party.Mr. Henry argued that the contest would not necessarily indicate disunity but could prove an opportunity for the party to revamp its image. He added that Dr. Phillips may have the best chance, particularly if the delegates consider who would be the best opponent for Bruce Golding and the Jamaica Labour Party. Dr. Phillips is to hold a rally at 5.30pm Sunday at the Harbour View Primary School. The PNP Secretariat also said it has not been officially informed of plans by Dr. Phillips to bid for the Presidency. |
