Plans by scores of workers at JAMALCO in Clarendon to go
on strike come Monday have been put on hold, at least for now. A decision was made Friday to delay the 72-hour strike notice which was served after the company failed to complete wage negotiations. It followed a meeting with management representatives of JAMALCO and representatives of the Union of Technical, Administrative and Supervisory Personnel (UTASP). General Secretary of UTASP St. Patrice Ennis said the company has until Monday to present a new wage package. UTASP said the 150 workers it represents are restive because of the company's failure to honour a 10-year-old agreement involving the government, unions and bauxite companies. That agreement called for bauxite workers to accept moderate salary increase in 1998 in lieu of land. The union claims that JAMALCO has not lived up to its end of the bargain. |
