Following months of speculation, the first challenger for
President of the People's National Party (PNP) could be known by this Sunday.RJR News understands that Vice President Dr. Peter Phillips, will be launching his campaign in a second bid for president of the party. Dr. Phillips last challenged for the presidency in 2006. When our News Centre spoke with Dr. Phillips this morning he would give nothing away. In fact he would only confirm that he is being urged to launch a bid but would make his intentions known shortly. "I have been having lots of consultations, thousands of comrades have come to me to express their view on the matter and I am shortly going to have to say something to the party and the country as to how I plan to proceed," he said. In February 2006 while the party was still in power, Dr. Phillips was defeated by current president Portia Simpson-Miller. That victory ushered her into office as Jamaica's first female Prime Minister. Since the PNP's defeat at the polls last September, talks have surfaced that Dr. Phillips should once again challenge for the presidency. He has been vocal at several constituency meetings in rural Jamaica, and so has been Mrs. Simpson-Miller. The Presidential election will take place at the party's annual general conference scheduled for September. |
