At least one of the Unions representing sugar workers is
expressing optimism about the relations involving the new owners of the
industry. The leadership of the island's three largest trade unions met for the first time with officials of the Brazilian firm Bio Infinity Energy, which has been selected to acquire state-run sugar factories. Senior representatives of the National Workers Union, the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union and the University and Allied Workers Union represented the workers at Friday morning's meeting. Island Supervisor of the BITU, Whitfield Matthews says the talks were positive. "We discussed a number of issues including the trade unions and how the trade unions will operate and they have agreed to maintain the union business. We are to meet again in another three weeks for us to be told the amount of people that are going to be retained after the redundancy," said Mr. Matthews. |
