Reports have surfaced of more industrial unrest at the
problem-plagued national airline, Air Jamaica.Unionised maintenance workers are reportedly on the verge of taking industrial action after failing to make headway with their demand for a new wage package. The employees who are represented by the National Workers Union (NWU) are upset after being informed that they will have to wait until next week for a meeting with the Ministry of Finance. The NWU said the workers are in a militant mood and as a result, normality could not be guaranteed. "They are very upset because the contract cannot be signed. These workers are feeling the economic pinch that everybody is feeling and they believe that it's unfair that this meager adjustment that they are requesting cannot be signed," said NWU Vice President Granville Valentine. Air Jamaica maintenance workers did not participate last month with other employees in signing contracts for a 14% wage increase. |
