The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC's) management has
not changed its plan to send home 236 drivers, conductors and bus cleaners last
week.On Wednesday, a meeting to discuss the matter ended without a resolution. The JUTC is sticking to its guns despite instructions from Transport Minister Mike Henry that the redundancy exercise be put on hold until it is discussed when he returns to the island on Sunday. Based on the development, First Vice President of the University and Allied Workers Union has requested that the JUTC Management reinstate any of the 236 workers who were being given lay off notices. The impasse at the JUTC developed last week when news came of the redundancy exercise. Scores of employees of the state-owned bus company went on strike last week to protest against the company's plan to lay off the workers. |
