Suriname teachers return to the classroom PDF Print

Image  High school teachers in Suriname returned to the classrooms Monday, after ending a four week strike on Friday.

Their protest also forced students to stage their own demonstration last week, demanding a solution to the impasse.

The strike ended after teachers and the government agreed on proposals submitted to the court, clearing the way for the resumption of their negotiations on new salaries and other benefits.

The presiding judge said after he reviewed the submissions from both sides, he found that they did not explore all available options to end the dispute.

Both sides have been at odds since the government announced a 10% salary increase for public workers, including teachers, under a new salary scheme.

The union wants other financial benefits and improved working conditions.

Some educators say final exams could be delayed by several weeks, because of the strike.
