Image  Transport officials have called a special meeting for Wednesday afternoon in the wake of reports of widespread confusion over the charging of new taxi fees.

Effective last Saturday, commuters were required to pay 25% more to travel on licensed route taxis.

But there have been reports of some taxi operators abusing the system and overcharging passengers.

It is reported that some taxi associations have not been able to get their members to comply with the new fare table.

On Tuesday, commuters in Clarendon protested on the Milk River Main Road to highlight their anger at the sharp increase in fares.

According to the residents, the $90 fare to travel from May Pen to Milk River has been hiked to $140.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Transport Reginald Allen said the management of the Transport Authority has called a meeting for 2pm Wednesday with taxi associations.

He told RJR News that the Authority might have to take strong action to get taxi operators to comply with the new fare structure.

"We will be meeting with these Association heads and thereafter we have to start a variety of measure in terms of getting conformity out there and that is to be done and will be done," said Mr. Allen.
