Industry Minister Karl Samuda has again served notice
that he will crack the whip if scrap metal dealers refuse to comply with new industry
regulations.Mr. Samuda said though there has been marked improvement since trade regulations were passed in November last year, disturbing reports of theft have resurfaced. Speaking during the Sectoral Debate Tuesday, Mr. Samuda warned that if the problem persists he will order a shutdown of the sector. He said the present scrap metal regulations will be amended to provide an increase in fines as a deterrent for the actions of these dishonest operators and that anyone found with scrap metal that they cannot account for will have their license revoked permanently. "Let me make it absolutely clear that if the complaints continue, I will shut down that industry again and I will shut it down until every single scrap metal dealer in this country has their place searched and confirmed that there are no stolen metals in it," he said. |
