A Jamaican woman who tried to smuggle drugs into Antigua has been sentenced to 16 months in prison.Carol Baker, 44, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and importation of illegal drugs when she appeared in the All Saints Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. A third charge of possession with intent to transfer was withdrawn after the prosecution offered no evidence. It is reported that Baker arrived in Antigua on a Caribbean Airlines Flight on May 3. During a search of her luggage, a customs officer discovered a brown package which contained a bushy substance. A quantity of ganja was also found strapped to Baker's body. Baker told the Court that she was promised US$2,000 to transport the drugs to Antigua, and took the offer because she is a poor woman with seven children in Jamaica. |
