One month after the Senate dismissed Prime Minister
Jacques Edouard Alexis, lawmakers in Haiti have rejected President Rene
Preval's latest nominee for the post. On Monday night the Lower House of Parliament voted by a margin of 51-35, with nine abstentions, to reject Eriq Pierre as Alexis' replacement. The latest rejection was the second for Pierre since Preval took over as President. Last week senators gave an overwhelming nod of approval to economist Eriq Pierre, an official with the Inter-American Development Bank. But on Monday night the chamber of deputies and the lower house rejected President's Rene Preval's nominee. According to one opposition legislator they did not buy into Pierre's vision. It is two times unlucky for Pierre who faced rejection from the lower house the last time he was nominated for the same position in 1997. So it is back to the drawing board for President Preval who now has to put forward another nominee hoping that that candidate will survive a vote of confidence in both houses of parliament. |
