Clear strategies and implementation - JMA PDF Print
Tuesday, 13 May 2008
JMA President, Omar Azan.  The private sector has outlined its expectations of new Minister of National Security Colonel Trevor MacMillan.

The Jamaica Manufacturers Association (JMA) said it wants a detailed crime plan containing clear targets and objectives.

"We'll be looking (for) clear strategies and proper implementation, what I would also look for from Colonel MacMillan is the need to be able to work with all," said JMA President Omar Azan speaking on RJR 94FM's current affairs discussion programme, Beyond the Headlines on Monday.

Mr. Azan said Colonel MacMillan needs to take a different approach the job as Security Minister, as the army techniques to which he is accustomed, may not necessarily work.

He said he will need to be tough on crime but able to work with everyone within the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Blessing in disguise

Mr. Azan added that the break up of the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Telecommunications into two Ministries will have a positive spin-off.

Mr. Azan believes the removal of Mining and Telecommunications will enable Minister Clive Mullings to focus more closely on energy-related issues.

"The Ministry of Energy is probably one of the most important Ministries today with what's happening globally with the whole issue of oil and they need somebody to be paying full attention, twenty-four-seven, to be able to negotiate proper deals etc," he said.

Mr. Mullings will continue to hold the three portfolios until Derrick Smith is able to take up the portfolios of Mining and Telecommunication when he recovers from surgery.
