Trade unions
have written to Agriculture Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton seeking an urgent
meeting to get an update on the sale of state-owned sugar factories. With the divestment of the factories scheduled to be completed in a matter of weeks, the unions said they are eager to hear how the sale will affect workers. President of the National Workers Union, Vincent Morrison, said he has requested a comprehensive report on the impending sale and wants to discuss among other things, the divestment of the sugar sector. "The government has indicated that by June of this year, they will be able to complete the divestment of the government's holding in the industries, that is the (Sugar Company of Jamaica) SCJ factories and we believe that they unions should be updated as to the progress made in respect to the divestment," said Mr. Morrison. The Government is expected to select a buyer for the five state sugar factories by the middle of the year. |
