The Disciplinary Committee
of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has recommended that West Indies all
rounder Marlon Samuels not face the prescribed mandatory minimum punishments for
violation of the International Cricket Council (ICC) code but
instead be placed on probation for a period not exceeding two years. The RJR Sports Department broke news on Saturday that the Disciplinary Committee had found Samuels guilty of violating the ICC rules of conduct in that he "received money, benefits or other reward which could bring him or the game of cricket into disrepute." The WICB on Monday confirmed that the right hand batsman now faces a two year ban effective May 9, 2008, the date of the hearing which was held in St. Lucia. Samuels was in contact with Indian bookie Mukesh Kochar on the eve of the first one-day international between the West Indies and India in Nagpur on January 21, 2007. The Committee said if they had any power, Samuels would not be banned for two years, but be put on probation. The decision and recommendations of the panel have been sent to the ICC. The regional cricketers start a 5 day training camp Monday ahead of the series against Australia starting May 22 at Sabina Park and all the members of the squad are present. |
