Cabinet is expected to discuss the future of National
Security Minister Derrick Smith Monday.Mr. Smith has been on leave since he underwent surgery more than a month ago. But there has been speculation whether he will return to the post due to ill-health. Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service Dwight Nelson has been acting as Minister of National Security since April 8. However, news broke Sunday that Prime Minister Bruce Golding is now considering replacing Mr. Smith with former Police Commissioner Colonel Trevor McMillan. The Prime Minister who has been under pressure to find a solution to the country's crime problem reportedly discussed the change with his top advisors on the weekend. When RJR News contacted Mr. Nelson Sunday night, he said he had not been informed of any replacement. He said he was instructed to manage the portfolio until Mr. Smith returns on May 19. General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party Karl Samuda told our news centre that he could not comment on the issue as he is not responsible for making appointments and directed RJR News to Prime Minister Golding. Permanent Secretary in the National Security Ministry Gilbert Scott also directed our News Centre to Mr. Golding. Colonel McMillan is currently a special advisor to the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service. |
