Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Les Green has
expressed confidence that with the infusion of more resources the Major
Investigation Task Force (MIT) will become more effective in dealing with of
crime in the Corporate Area. Speaking to RJR News Centre Saturday afternoon, ACP Green said the MIT has seen significant successes in curbing gun crime in six divisions since its launch. He said this is despite never received the level of staffing it required. "What we're doing is building enhanced relationships with various communities but above all providing the trust and confidence in witnesses who wouldn't come forward to provide statements against those involved in the gun crime." Fast track cases
ACP Green also lamented the difficulty the police faced
in securing the testimony of witnesses of serious crimes. He recommended that shorter trials might solve the problem. "It is very difficult to retain contact with witnesses especially from the most disadvantaged areas of Kingston, so what we'll be doing is making sure they have support as possible, retain contact and provide as much opportunities for witnesses to come to court at an earlier date." ACP Green said this is where the criminal justice system has to play its part in making sure that the police can have early trial dates. |
