The
Parliamentary Opposition has called on Energy Minister Clive Mulling to prevent
the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) from passing on its $2 billion wage
bill to customers. The JPS is to pay out $2.3 billion to thousands of employees in keeping with a job reclassification exercise conducted between 2001 and 2007. Speculation is rife that JPS customers will be asked to foot the bill. But in a statement issued Thursday night, Opposition Spokesman on Energy, Michael Peart said JPS customers who are already burdened with rising electricity bills should not be asked to pay an additional expense. Mr. Peart said Mr. Mullings should ensure that the JPS is not allowed to recover the full cost of the settlement in the short term. The Opposition Spokesman also called on the Office of Utilities Regulation to prevent the cost from being passed on to JPS customers. |
