Murders declined slightly in April PDF Print

Image The police have released their official crime figures for the month of April.

The official blotters show the number of murders dipped slightly compared to the figures for April 2007.

The figures show a total of 119 murders for April 2008, compared to 121 for the same period last year.

It is also less than the 126 murders recorded for March this year.

52 of the murders recorded last month were deemed gang related, while the motives for 32 have not yet been established.

28 were categorised as being the result of "other criminal acts", while five were domestic and two were drug related

The gun featured prominently in April, being used in 93 of the killings.

18 women were among the dead while the number of children killed moved from two in March to six in April.

Robberies increased slightly over the past month to 205, up from 198.

Rape and carnal abuse cases also rose slightly in April to 58 and 33 respectively. 

The figures show that 489 persons were murdered between January and the end of April.

However, figures obtained by RJR News show that 540 persons murdered up to Wednesday.
