Suriname contemplates capping rice exports PDF Print
Wednesday, 30 April 2008
Image  The Surinamese government said it is considering capping exports of rice in order to prevent a shortage of the commodity on the local market.

Suriname said the quota would be between 20,000 and 25,000 tonnes.

The government said a licence will shortly be required to ensure exact registration of how much rice is being exported and how much is being used for local consumption.

The Agriculture Minister said government is holding talks with the Association of Rice Exporters which had asked for a definitive statement in light of the contracts signed with international buyers.

Security at the borders and the ports is also to be beefed up in order to prevent smuggling.
