Marine experts believe that cleaning up litter from the
country's beaches is not only affecting the oceans but has become a costly
undertaking. With more than 30,000 pieces of garbage and other debris being removed from the country's beaches last year, this year's coastal clean-up will be emphasizing behavioural change. According to the Ocean Conservancy, this is the best way to tackle the problem of marine litter. It said educational programmes will be implemented within their communities to create maximum impact. The Conservatory believes that the oceans are losing their resilience due to pollution and will soon no longer be able to protect us. An annual coastal clean-up conference is now underway in Montego Bay, St. James. This is the first time that Jamaica has staged the event. International Coastal clean-up day is slated for September 20 and participants are hoping to make an impact on communities over the next five months leading up to the big day. |
