Air Jamaica
will Tuesday begin the first tranche of a $70 million pay out to hundreds of
flight attendants who were employed between 2003 and 2005. The payments are in keeping with an Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT) ruling handed down earlier this year. President-General of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) Kavon Gayle, said more than 500 flight attendants will receive retroactive allowances. "[Payments will be made] beginning this month, May and June...this payment will also be made to flight attendants who have left the company and those whose positions were made redundant in 2005 bearing in mind that the payments are retroactive from 2003 to 2005," said Mr. Gayle. In February, Air Jamaica lost a five year battle with flight attendants over the non-payment of a special duty allowance. The attendants became embroiled in a row with the airline after it reportedly failed to pay for duties carried out before and after flights. |
