Scores
of persons gathered outside Gordon House on Thursday in the usual clamour to
see their leaders arrive for the state opening. Well wishers attempted to mingle after the past half hour of stiff formalities. There were a number of firsts for the ceremonial opening of parliament including the first time Prime Minister Bruce Golding was leading the government ministers into Gordon House. A new Commissioner of Police Rear Admiral Hardly Lewin while Major General Stewart Saunders took his place at the Governor General's side as the head of the Defense Force for the first time. Some things remain the same including the obligatory groups of green and orange clad political supporters, albeit being quieter than in previous years, cheering from the north and the south. The crowds witnessed the precise maneuvers of the first battalion Jamaica Regiment holding the Guard of Honour clad in their bright red jacketed uniform and of course spiffily attired members of the Lower and Upper Houses well aware that they could be highlighted in the social pages on Friday. |
