Magistrate orders prosecution to charge or release policeman PDF Print
Wednesday, 26 March 2008
Magistrate Glen Brown ordered that a policeman now in custody on suspicion of robbery and other crimes be charged or released by Thursday.

The magistrate made the order after lawyers for Constable Anthony Harris filed a writ in court demanding his release.

The lawyers argued that no charges have been laid against the police constable who was taken into custody three weeks ago.

Investigators told the magistrate that they are in the process of submitting a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a ruling.

But Mr. Brown told them that the constable should be released by Thursday if no charges are laid.

Constable Harris, who was attached to the Anchovy Police, was arrested on March 8 following a high speed chase involving a police team and a group of robbers in Montego Bay.

Investigators alleged that Constable Harris was among a group of men who held-up and robbed a man in the second city.

They also say he was on suspension at the time of the robbery.

Another policeman based in Montego Bay was arrested with him.
