OAS sending team to observe Grenada’s up-coming elections PDF Print
Tuesday, 26 February 2008
Image  The Organisation of American States (OAS) has announced plans to send a technical team to Grenada next month to assist the Elections Office in solving problems associated with the voters' registration list.

OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza told a news conference on Tuesday that the hemispheric body would also be sending an observer mission for the general election which could be held sometime this year.

The Elections Office has been a source of ongoing controversy since late last year when the previous Supervisors and Deputy Supervisor of Elections were removed.

Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell had made the request for assistance during talks with the OAS official following repeated calls from the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that there were discrepancies in the current voters list.

Supervisor of Elections, Nadica McIntyre said her office was to recover more than 500 missing names and purge the list of the names of more than 100 dead people.

Opposition Senator and trade unionist Chester Humphrey blamed the discrepancies on a recent computer crash and accused Dr Mitchell's ruling New National Party of tampering with the list, a charge which party officials have denied.
