The Fraud Squad could be called in to investigate the
allocation of scholarships worth half a million dollars by the Office of the
Prime Minister (OPM) two years ago.The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament deliberated on the matter during its regular sitting at Gordon House on February 19th. The two education grants issued were approved by a project officer at the OPM. One grant went to the officer's relative. Additionally, instead of sending the money directly to the educational institution, the officer placed it in his personal account. The issue is further complicated because the educational assistance programme did not originally fall under the OPM. The matter is now the subject of an internal probe by the OPM. The PAC is to receive an update on this investigation when the examination of the OPM's audited accounts continues next week. |
