There has been another mass killing in Guyana. At least 12 people, both police and civilians were killed when gunmen attacked a police station in Bartica, South of Georgetown. The killings which took place on February 17th came on the heels of the murders of 11 persons in the country three weeks ago. Guyanese journalist Dennis Chebrol said people in the country are apprehensive about the situation in the country. "The incident happened about 85 miles south west of Georgetown, in the gold and mining township of Bartica. Not withstanding the fact that it's so far away form the capital city Georgetown and the rest of the coast line, when one takes into consideration what happened about two weeks ago, and again last night, clearly there is a great deal of concern," he said. "The government today dispatched a team of high level officials, including government Ministers to the area. But in the eyes of many Guyanese, that has become a monotonous situation as the government's response has been virtually the same," said Mr. Chebrol. He said so far, police investigations showed no link between this latest attack and a similar one about two weeks ago in the township of Lusignan. |
