Mayor of Portmore, Keith Hinds said he has sought advice from
Minister with responsibility for Local Government Robert Montaque, on how to
proceed in the dispute between himself and PNP Councillors of the Portmore
Municipal Council. The dispute erupted at the Council Meeting on February 13th when the People's National Party (PNP) led Finance Committee voted to cease the Mayor's monthly allocation for a community welfare fund. He told the RJR News Centre that he was awaiting word from Mr. Montaque before making any announcements on a course of action. Mayor Hinds said he was hopeful the matter would be resolved before the next Council meeting in March. This is the second time in a month that political tension had surfaced at the Portmore Municipal Council. There was a major uproar last month over who should chair the Council's six committees. It was later decided that PNP Councillors would head all the committees. |
