If the new Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has his way,
then the quaint Georgian town of Lucea in Hanover is poised to become the next resort town in Jamaica.
According to Mr. Bartlett with multimillion dollar developments underway including the 2,400 room Fiesta hotel and Dolphin Cove as the largest marine attraction, the town must be transformed. As he launched the Lucea leg of the Spruce up Jamaica programme Thursday, Mr. Bartlett told RJR News that he is looking at the immediate development plans as well as potential for the small town. He is specifically looking at transforming Fort Charlotte into an upscale eco-tourism area, and implementing the new artisan village concept in that area too. Lucea is the main town between the two major resort towns of Negril and Montego Bay and is traversed by tourists on a daily basis. But Mr. Bartlett believes it should be a major stop. In the meantime with plans for dredging of the harbour and expansion of the town towards the sea, the tourism Minister was quick to note that the projects will be subject to scrupulous scientific guidance including Environmental Impact assessments. Three point six million dollars, which will be distributed on a monthly basis, has been earmarked to spruce up the town this year. He says the announcement regarding Lucea and the town of Falmouth which is also undergoing major development will be made during his budget presentation. |
