Broadcasting Commission addresses Flow’s access fees for local channels PDF Print
Friday, 11 January 2008
The Broadcasting Commission is moving to clarify concerns surrounding the issue of access fees for local channels aired via the cable network operated by Flow.

Some local cable operators have reportedly complained about high fees they are required to pay to Flow to host locally produced programmes on that cable company's network.

The Gleaner newspaper reported that Flow is asking for a standard fee of US$7,000 to host locally produced programme channels.

However the regulatory agency, says Flow's license mandates it to carry the Public Broadcasting Corporation cable channel and at least two of the national television channels.

The Commission says Flow must also enable a minimum of three community access channels available in each county.

The release also said Flow is required to obtain programming from independent programme providers.

This in order to satisfy a requirement in its license that independent local content channels represent at least six per cent of the total channels Flow offers.

The Commission also pointed out that any arrangements between Flow and the independent providers must be separated from those related to the local channels it must carry.
