A brief meeting was held
Monday between Senator Arthur Williams, State Minister responsible for the
Public Service, and members of the Police Federation. The meeting at the Ministry's Office at National Heroes Circle, was cut short as Senator Williams had to attend a Cabinet meeting. Another meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday to discuss the current freeze on public sector wages. In April 2009, the government instituted a wage freeze saying it had no money to pay salary increases. The Police Federation and the government have been at loggerheads since the announcement. The Federation has said it would lobby to get the government to commit to paying the seven percent wage increase which was due to its members for the 2009/2010 fiscal year. The Federation which represents the more than 8,000 rank and file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force insists that despite the public sector wage freeze, monies due under the third Memorandum of Understanding are still owed. |
