The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) is reporting that
the prices of goods produced in the mining and quarrying industry have
increased marginally.
In its Producer Price Index published Thursday, STATIN
said the index for that sector jumped by 0.1% percent for the September 2009
period. The Manufacturing industry also recorded an increase of 0.4% in producer prices. STATIN says this movement was due mainly to hikes in the index for the Food, Beverage and Tobacco grouping, which rose by 0.7%. The body says in the fiscal year to date, April 2009 to September the index in the mining and Quarrying industry advanced by 7.4%, while manufacturing increased by 4.6%. However STATIN says the movement for the September 2008 to September '09 period saw an overall decline of 14.7% in the index for the Mining and Quarrying industry. The same was not true for the manufacturing sector which rose by 10.3% over the similar period. This reflects a 0.6% increase over the August 2008 to August 2009 period. The Producer Price Index represents a family of indices that measure the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers of goods and services. The index is industry-based with each establishment classified according to its main activity, for example, the mining or manufacturing industry. |
