The Government has moved
decisively to tackle once and for all the rapidly expanding guns for drugs
trade operating between Jamaica
and Haiti. It has been announced that the Golding administration will be using diplomatic channels to address the problem. The illegal trade has proven to be a national security nightmare for Jamaica despite the efforts of Operation Kingfish. Parliament was told Tuesday afternoon that Dr. Ken Baugh, Foreign Affairs Minister has been assigned to open diplomatic channels with his counterpart in Haiti to get full co-operation at the highest level. Prime Minister Bruce Golding said the decision was made after the outgoing Police Commissioner submitted recommendations to address the issue. "Immediately on receipt of that document, I instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to make arrangement through the appropriate diplomatic channels for me to intervene at the highest level. This would have involved my going to Haiti to meet with President Rene Preval to see how we can institute arrangements where we could collaborate to address this problem," said Mr. Golding. He added that the Haitian Government is faced with a dilemma in which it is unable to exert control over the southern sections of the country where guns are shipped to Jamaica. |
