More than 7,000 jobs
could be created if the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission gives the
green light to an application from the Kingston
and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) to operate a city
lottery. The KSAC has been complaining that it is yet to receive a response from the Commission more than a year after its application was submitted. Deputy Mayor of Kingston, Lee Clarke, says a portion of the earnings from the lottery will be used to upgrade public infrastructure in Kingston and St. Andrew. "Profit would be going to fix the roads, drains and gullies which there can be no amount of taxes in Jamaica that we can put on the people to fix these roads. Kingston and St. Andrew alone carries 2,200 roads," "The government has also asked the council to take over the land settlement roads that have been there for quite a while, 20 years without any improvement at all so that would be a major cost," Mr. Clarke said. |
