| Over 100 Jamaicans receive national honours |

107 Jamaicans were on Monday recognised for their
contribution to nation building at the National Honours and Awards Ceremony. Governor General Professor Kenneth Hall presented the awards at the National Indoor Sports Centre. The venue of the ceremony was moved from Kings House due to a week of unstable weather conditions. Seven persons received the Order of Jamaica, among them; Political Ombudsman Bishop Herro Blair, for outstanding service to religion and public service; Former FIFA referee and cricket umpire Steve Bucknor, for outstanding service in the field of sports and Chief Executive Officer of the Bank of Nova Scotia William "Bill" Clarke, for sterling contribution to banking and public service. Professor Edwin Jones, Keble Munn, Dorothy Pine-McCarthy and Adrian Strachan, also received the order of Jamaica for excellence in the fields of academia; agriculture and public service respectively. Forty Jamaicans received the Order of Distinction Commander class, including Lambert Brown, for service to the trade union movement and International Reggae star Orville 'Shaggy' Burrell, for contribution to the music industry. Another 35 persons were conferred with the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer. They include Dr. Wendel Abel, Nurses Association president Edith Allwood Anderson, Ewart 'U-Roy' Beckford, Trevor Simpson, and Winston 'Burning Spear' Rodney. With respect to the Badge of Honour for Gallantry, seven persons were recognised, including eight-year old Don-Christopher Barnes, who saved his friend from drowning. Eleven persons received the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service, while seven persons were awarded the Badge of Honour for Long and Faithful Service in areas such as community development, community service, education, nursing, dentistry and the public service. |
