ImageThe Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) will be forking out $8.5 million to hold the upcoming parish council by-election in Central Westmoreland.

Electors in the Cornwall Mountain Division will be going to the polls on July 14 to vote for a new Councillor.

RJR News caught up Director of Elections Orette Fisher Saturday afternoon while EOJ officials were in the Division making preparations for the polls.

He said the EOJ was demonstrating how the new electronic voter system works.

"We have been at the Cornwall Mountain Primary School, Elite Prep School and the Coke's View Primary school where we've been conducting demonstration for electors in the division so that they can get a full understanding of how the Electronic Voter Identification and Ballot Identifying System (EVIBIS) works and ask any questions that they might have," said Mr. Fisher.

He added that a similar exercise will be conducted for party workers.

"We will be doing the same thing for the political parties and their workers tomorrow and those EOJ workers coming from the constituency will also be trained to use the EVIBIS system," said

The Cornwall Mountain Division seat became vacant when Councillor Michael Smith died in early May.

Bernard Vanreil of the People's National Party (PNP) and Keith Barnes of the Jamaica Labour Party are the two candidates nominated to contest the seat.

The PNP now controls all 14 divisions in the Westmoreland Parish Council.
