Fishermen
in Salt River, Southern Clarendon are calling
for steps to be taken against the illegal practice of using explosives to catch
fish. The fishermen complain that there are persons from other areas who come in to catch fish using this practice. According to a spokesperson for the group, the practice of using dynamite is posing a threat to their livelihood. "We want the coast guards to come and out and put a stop to it so we can more fish to shoot because (there's been a drop in the fish population) and the dynamite man dem are (making it worse). They had stopped for while because the coast guards were regularly patrolling the sea and when this happened, we were shooting more doctor fish as more fishes were on the reef," said one Salt River fisherman. Chief Executive Officer of the Fisheries Agency, Lieutenant Commander Richard Russell, told RJR News that investigations by the agency have revealed that persons involved in road construction are selling explosives to the fishermen. He says he will be discussing the matter with representatives from the Ministry of National Security. |
