The Opposition
People's National Party (PNP) has selected a new Caretaker/Candidate for the
North East St. Ann constituency in what could be seen as a sign that it might
continue with its dual citizenship battle.North East St. Ann is currently represented in Parliament by Shahini Robinson, of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) who is at the centre of a legal battle over her dual citizenship. During a meeting held at the St. Ann's Bay Primary School Thursday night, Councillor for the Hagley Park Division in the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) Paul Stewart was elected the PNP's representative for the constituency. It is reported that the party has been without a representative since attorney-at-law Oswest Senior-Smith was defeated in the September 2007 General Election. Senior officials of the PNP Thursday night refused to comment on speculation that Mr. Stewart's appointment was in preparation for a possible by-election in North East St. Ann. Mr. Stewart, a businessman he said he was ready for any eventuality. He outlined plans to carryout a public relations campaign in the constituency. "We're about to start now ... at all times I think the party should be ready for elections so we're going to make sure that North East (St. Ann) is ready for anything that is to take place," he told RJR News. The PNP has still not indicated whether it will shelve plans to mount further legal challenges against sitting JLP Members of Parliament who have dual citizenship. Following last weekend's meeting of its National Executive Council, the party said it was still in negotiations with the JLP. |
