An announcement is to be
made in two weeks on whether the country will have three new constituencies
bring to total number of constituencies to 63. The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) met Wednesday to review the constituency boundaries in keeping with recommendations from Parliament. Parliament had approved a recommendation for the electoral boundaries to be increased from 60 to 63 to prevent the possibility of a tie during a national election. ECJ Chairman Professor Errol Miller says during the meeting, the selected members of the Commission presented proposals on the increase in constituencies. According to him, the parties will meet again on July 15 when a final decision will be made. "Based on the May 31, 2009 Voters List and the guidelines described by the constitution, both sides are now going to study those proposals and make a decision at the July 15 meeting," said Professor Miller. The country will know the ECJ's decision when the commission holds a press conference after its meeting. |
