More than 40,000 names
have been added to the country's new Voter's List. The May 31 list which was printed by the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) a week ago now contains close to 1.5 million names. Director of Elections Orrette Fisher says the increase reflects the number of persons who were enumerated after the previous Voters' List was published on November 30 last year. "The May 31 Voter List was published on June 20 as scheduled after the postponement. The old Voters List had 1,442,904 persons and somewhere between 43 and 44,000 persons have been added to the new list," he said. The publishing of the Voters List was delayed due to the June 16 by-election in North East St. Catherine. This was in keeping with Jamaica's electoral rules which require that when an election date is announced the existing list is used. |
