Body armour) was among several items reportedly taken
from a man who was killed by the police in Norwood, St James Tuesday morning. The man is yet to be identified but according to Superintendent Maurice Robinson, Commanding Officer for St James, his men responded to reports of heavily armed thugs in the Paradise Norwood area. He says when the police arrived, they were greeted by a hail of bullets and a shoot-out ensued. When the shooting subsided, one man was found dead clutching a home-made high-powered rifle containing three 12 gauge cartridges. Superintendent Robinson says the man was clad in camouflage body armour. "He was also found with a mask over his face. The police are still in the area searching for the other men involved in this morning's shoot-out. We will continue to maintain a heavy presence in the community to reassure citizens and to deal effectively with the criminal elements that have been plaguing the residents for a number of weeks," he said. The gun brings to 19, the number of weapons seized by the St. James Police since the start of the year. Since last weekend, four guns including a .38 revolver stolen from a St. Elizabeth businessman have been seized. Superintendent Robinson added that five guns have been stolen from licensed firearms holders over the same period. |
