Information reaching our news centre is that there are two
suspected cases of the H1N1 influenza virus on the island. It is understood that officials from the Minister of Health are now locked in a meeting to discuss the containment and treatment of these persons suspected to be infected with the virus. The Ministry of Health has not confirmed these cases. Earlier on Saturday the Ministry called a press conference for 2pm, however this was later postponed as officials there said the Minister of Health, Ruddy Spencer was still being brief on the matter. Cases of Influenza A H1N1, formally called swine flu, were detected first in April of this year with cases in Mexico then the United States. The World Health Organization has to date confirmed over 17,000 cases world wide of which it says 119 persons have died from the virus. It is thought that the H1N1 flu spreads the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses are transmitted, mainly through the coughs and sneezes of people who are sick with the virus. |
