The Government is
to move decisively to address the furore its imposition of General Consumption
Tax (GCT) on some categories of books and computers, among other things.Finance Minister Audley Shaw is to present the Government's final position on the matter when he closes the budget debate Wednesday afternoon. During his contribution to the debate on Tuesday, Prime Minister Bruce Golding said his administration heard the concerns raised since the Mr. Shaw's announcement on April 23 and hinted that changes might be made to the tax measure. "There have been criticisms of the tax imposed on books and computers although we've exempted those required for education purposes. We've listened to the concern but we can't go all the way because the vast majority of computers that are brought into the island are not sold for educational purposes but for business and personal use," Mr. Golding said. RJR 94 FM will broadcast Mr. Shaw's presentation live. |
