A District Constable attached to the Freeport Police Station in St. James was held Thursday afternoon after allegedly being caught smuggling ganja into the lock-up.

It is believed that the cop headed a ganja selling operation at the lock-up.

He was allegedly found with 100 clear plastic bags, six lighters and cigarettes.

The district constable was reportedly under surveillance for some time as the St. James Police beefed up its efforts to weed out corrupt cops.

He was a guard at the Freeport Police Station and was on duty Thursday afternoon.

Minutes after five, the district constable reportedly went into the cell area but was approached by a surveillance team which found him in possession of several ounces of ganja.

He was immediately arrested and a ruling is now being awaited from the Director of Public Prosecution for him to be charged.

The DC is the second this year to be arrested on corruption activities on the cell block and the fourth St. James cop to be taken in over the same period.

Commanding officer for St. James Superintendent Maurice Robinson said while most of his officers are hardworking there are a few crippling crime fighting efforts.
