For the fourth consecutive month customers of the Jamaica
Public Service Company (JPS) will see a reduction in their electricity bills. The power company said the fuel charge on January bills will be the lowest in nearly two years. A press release from JPS said the fuel and independent power producer (IPP) charge that will be applied to bills this month is eight dollars and 65 cents per kilowatt, compared to last month's $12.16. This reduction will translate to overall decreases of up to 19% in some customers' bills. A typical residential customer who uses 200 kilowatts per hour will see an average 15% decrease this month while business customers who have not increased their electricity usage will enjoy a decline between 15% and 19%. JPS said with this reduction, fuel and IPP charges on electricity bills have gone down by 57% since August last year. Unprecedented increases in oil prices in the first few months of last year resulted in monthly adjustments in charges peaking at a high of $20.32 per kilowatt per hour in August. |
