The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has provided an
explanation for Tuesday's power outage which sparked a protest by some students
at the University
of Technology on Old Hope Road in
St. Andrew. It said the outage was caused by a motor vehicle accident which took place near the campus. A car hit a JPS pole dislodging power lines and leaving sections of Papine, Mavis Bank, Irish Town, Woodford, Gordon Town, Chestervale, New Castle, Elletson Flats, Kintyre and surrounding areas without light. Power was restored Tuesday night. The outage caused angry UTECH students to demonstrate as they were unable to sit exams. The students claimed they were not given a proper explanation by the University's administration on the status of their exams. "They scheduled exams that are supposed to be between five and eight and there has been a power cut since four p.m. this afternoon. They are saying that we either receive a passing grade for that test or do the exam at another time," said a student. |
