Jobs cuts at Rio Mar Hotel in Puerto Rico PDF Print
Wednesday, 03 December 2008
Rio Mar Hotel.  The global financial crisis has claimed more tourism jobs, as 200 workers have been sent home from a luxury resort in Puerto Rico.

Most of the laid off employees at the Wyndham Worldwide's Rio Mar Beach Resort and Spa, worked in catering and transportation.

According to Jordan Wilson, spokeswoman for Rio Mar, the combination of a challenging economic environment and reduced airlift to San Juan have slowed down demand for resort destinations.

Last month another luxury hotel, Caribe Hilton, dismissed more than 50 employees.

Puerto Rico's Hotel and Tourism Association said the island's main carrier, American Airlines, cut daily flights out of the capital from 93 to 51 in September.

Hotels have also reported a 10% drop in bookings.

Other Caribbean destinations have also been affected by the financial crisis, including the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos islands.
