President Hugo Chavez has announced a plan to seek a constitutional amendment
to allow him to stand for re-election. Mr. Chavez said he hoped to remain in power until 2021. The Venezuelan President told thousands of supporters on Sunday that he would be seeking the constitutional changes necessary to allow the president to stand for indefinite re-election. Mr. Chavez narrowly lost a referendum on exactly that issue last December and under the present rules, he must stand down in 2012. The opposition says that the same issue cannot be voted on twice but President Chavez says he may be able to get around that. |
