In the last 5 months, the Customs Department has won over
$85 million from court settlements under the Proceeds of Crime Act.The Department says the money was netted in successfully pressing 110 Cash Seizure Forfeitures cases in the courts. The money has been place in to the Consolidated Fund. The Customs Department believes that these seizures have frustrated the efforts of those engaged in the lottery scam. This is evidenced by a reduction in the number of packages containing money that have been seized coming from overseas through post offices, courier services and airports. In the meantime, Jamaica Customs is also investigating numerous offences of the Proceeds of Crime Act specifically money laundering offences and intends to arrest and prosecute the offenders in tandem with the police. Customs Officers are authorized under the Proceeds of Crime Act to prosecute money laundering offences and breaches of the Cash Seizure provisions of the Act. |
